Stratco Cooldek vs Outback Flat Patio: Which Is Better for Your Home?

If you're considering a new Stratco patio, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is whether to choose an insulated Cooldek patio roof or the more traditional Outback Flat patio roof.

Both are excellent roofing systems, but I don't believe every homeowner needs to spend the extra money on an insulated roof.

When I'm discussing a new patio with a client, I normally start with a different question:

What are you actually trying to achieve with your outdoor space?

Are you mainly looking for protection from Melbourne's sun and rain? Or are you trying to create an extension of your living space where your family can entertain and spend time throughout the year?

The answer usually tells us much more about which roofing system will suit the home.

What Is a Stratco Cooldek Patio?

Stratco Cooldek is an insulated roofing system that combines the roof, insulation and finished ceiling surface into one panel.

For homeowners who want their patio to feel more like an extension of the house rather than simply a roof over an outdoor area, Cooldek is often the system I recommend.

The insulation becomes particularly valuable when the area is intended for regular use through Melbourne's changing weather conditions.

It also creates a clean finished ceiling underneath the patio, which works particularly well when incorporating features such as LED downlights, ceiling fans and suitable outdoor heating.

For larger entertaining areas, that clean ceiling can make a significant difference to how finished the space feels.

Cooldek provides a clean finished ceiling that works well with integrated lighting, fans and other outdoor-living features.

What Is a Stratco Outback Flat Patio?

The Stratco Outback Flat is a single-skin steel roofing system and is one of the most practical patio options we install.

It provides excellent weather protection without necessarily requiring the additional investment of an insulated roofing system.

For a smaller patio where the homeowner primarily wants protection from sun and rain, an Outback Flat can make a lot of sense.

For example, if the area already has adequate lighting mounted to the house, there is no requirement for ceiling fans or heat strips, and the patio isn't intended to become a fully developed outdoor room, I often don't see a reason to recommend Cooldek simply because it's the more premium product.

Sometimes the simpler solution is the right solution.

Outback Flat is a practical option when the main objective is reliable sun and rain protection without the additional cost of an insulated roof.

Cooldek vs Outback Flat: What's the Biggest Difference?

The biggest difference isn't simply whether one roof is insulated.

It's how you intend to use the space underneath it.

I generally recommend Cooldek when:

• The patio will become the main family entertaining area.

• You want to use the space throughout the year.

• Reducing radiant summer heat is important.

• Ceiling fans are planned.

• Outdoor heating may be incorporated.

• Integrated LED downlights are wanted.

• Outdoor blinds may eventually be installed.

• Acrylic or glass enclosure is being considered.

• A clean, ceiling-like appearance is important.

In these situations, spending more on the roof system can make sense because you're effectively creating another usable living area.

I generally consider Outback Flat when:

• The patio is relatively small.

• The main objective is weather protection.

• Existing wall lighting is adequate.

• Ceiling fans aren't required.

• Heat strips aren't required.

• The area isn't intended to be substantially enclosed.

• You want a straightforward outdoor cover.

• Budget is an important consideration.

I don't recommend Cooldek simply because it's the more expensive product. The roof should suit how you intend to use the space.

What If You Want Ceiling Fans or Outdoor Heating?

This is something worth considering before choosing the roofing system.

Cooldek provides a robust insulated roof and finished ceiling, making it particularly well suited to outdoor areas where the design includes items such as ceiling fans and suitable heat strips.

With an Outback Flat patio, these features may still be possible, but additional structural framing can be required depending on the design and installation requirements.

That can introduce more visible framing underneath the patio.

If you're planning a larger entertaining area with lighting, fans and heating, it's worth thinking about those requirements during the initial design rather than trying to add everything later.

Planning fans, lighting and heating during the patio design stage can produce a much cleaner finished outdoor space.

What About Natural Light?

One concern homeowners regularly raise with me is:

"Will putting a patio over these windows make my house dark?"

It's an important question.

Natural light needs to be considered regardless of whether we're designing a Cooldek or Outback Flat patio, particularly when the patio extends across windows or doors serving living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens or other habitable spaces.

Both roofing systems have options for introducing additional natural light.

Outback Flat roofs can incorporate Rooflites, while Cooldek roofs can incorporate compatible Cool Light panels.

There is another detail that often gets overlooked: the underside colour of the roof.

Outback Flat roofing commonly provides an Alpine White underside, while Cooldek can provide a Surfmist ceiling finish.

Compared with darker roofing solutions, these light-coloured underside finishes can help reflect available daylight around the covered outdoor area and help maintain a bright, open feeling.

The important point is that natural light should be considered during the patio design, not after the roof has already been installed.

Planning to Enclose the Patio Later?

This is another question I ask clients during the initial consultation.

You may not want an enclosed outdoor room today, but what about in three or five years?

Some homeowners eventually add:

• Outdoor blinds

• Acrylic panels

• Glass doors

• Heating

• Ceiling fans

• Additional lighting

If you're already thinking about making the patio more enclosed and comfortable throughout the year, I would generally give Cooldek serious consideration from the beginning.

Designing the patio around the long-term use of the space can be considerably easier than trying to make a basic patio perform like an outdoor room later.

Don't Forget the Existing House

Choosing Cooldek or Outback Flat is only one part of designing a patio.

Before we build, I also look closely at what we're attaching the new structure to.

That can include the condition of the:

• Existing gutters

• Timber fascia

• Roof tiles or metal roofing

• Ridge and tile pointing

• Stormwater drainage

• Existing eaves

This becomes particularly important with patio designs using riser brackets, because access to parts of the existing roof, gutter and fascia can become much more difficult after the patio and associated flashings have been installed.

Does a Cooldek or Outback Patio Need a Building Permit?

The roofing system itself doesn't determine whether a building permit is required.

The size, height, location, attachment method and other characteristics of the proposed patio all need to be considered.
